On February 11, KPMB partner Mitchell Hall will participate in BUILDEX Vancouver’s architecture keynote, “Innovations in Adaptive Reuse”. The panel will discuss strategies for adaptive reuse in Vancouver, addressing the balance between preserving architectural heritage and meeting evolving contemporary needs.
With a multi-decade career at KPMB, Mitchell will share insights from his diverse portfolio of architectural work across North America and the lessons they hold for Vancouver.
Case studies will include the Ottawa Art Gallery Expansion, which contributed to the transformation of a city block originally designed for courthouses into a cultural destination. He will also discuss the reuse of the historic Don Jail at Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital, the design of Canada’s National Ballet School, and the ongoing redevelopment of The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) campus, all in Toronto.
The panel will be moderated by Mona Lemoine, associate and senior sustainability consultant at DIALOG. Mitchell will share the stage with Perkins&Will principal Ryan Bragg, SvN principal Kai Hotson, and Diamond Schmitt Architects senior associate Duncan Bates.
Mitchell joined KPMB during the firm’s formative years and contributed to seminal Governor General’s Award-winning projects such as Woodsworth College and Kitchener City Hall.
In the years since, he has been integral to many of KPMB’s most significant scientific, healthcare, hospitality, and cultural projects, including the award-winning Isttaniokaksini / Science Commons at the University of Lethbridge and The Leaf at Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg.
BUILDEX Vancouver is Western Canada’s largest exhibition and conference for the design, construction, and real estate industries.
