KPMB partner Mitchell Hall recently joined the Architecturally Speaking podcast from the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) to discuss how architects can successfully collaborate with clients. Hosted by Ryan Schwartz, the episode is a wide-ranging conversation about the bond between architect and client, covering topics like the importance of a shared project vision and effective communication.

Hall joined KPMB in 1989 and became a partner in 2021. Over the decades, he has directed interdisciplinary teams to design large and complex projects of various typologies, including education, culture, and healthcare. In collaboration with clients and consultants, Hall is skilled at preserving design intent throughout the development process, motivated by architecture’s ability to improve the human condition and address the pressing collective challenges of our time.

In the episode, the pair discuss key case studies from Hall’s career that were born from a shared vision and deep mutual trust between client and architect, including Hennick Bridgepoint HospitalCanada’s National Ballet Schoolthe Jackson-Triggs Niagara Estate Winery, and the Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Centre at the University of Waterloo

“What differentiates architecture from mere building is a client that has a vision,” Hall tells Schwartz. “To me, that’s the most important quality that a client can have — and they have to provide strong leadership.”

Currently, Hall is leading KPMB’s role in Project Horizon, the multi-phase redevelopment of The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) campus in Toronto. KPMB is working in joint venture with Stantec.
