Workers at First Canadian Place arrived to a surprise on Tuesday morning: a collection of sculptures built entirely from canned food. Assembled the previous night for the 2026 edition of CANstruction Toronto, the display included an eight-foot-tall Miffy — the fictional rabbit created by Dutch artist and illustrator Dick Bruna in 1955 — constructed from nearly 6,000 cans.
Since 1999, the non-profit competition has gathered architects, engineers, and other building professionals to donate to the Daily Bread Food Bank and raise public awareness about Toronto’s growing hunger gap. After the event, all non-perishable food items are donated to Daily Bread. The annual event is now one of the food bank’s largest private donors: last year, CANstruction donated more than 67,000 pounds of shelf-stable food to help feed 120,000 people.
At this year’s competition, Miffy was awarded Best Original Design. Designed and built by KPMB, PCL Construction, Entuitive, and students from Malvern Collegiate Institute, Miffy and her wagon full of cans is a reminder that a better world isn’t only achieved through grand gestures, but humble acts of everyday kindness and generosity.
The team brought Miffy to life using white tuna cans for her silhouette, yellow cans for her dress, and red tomato cans for her wagon. In the background, green beans represent a meadow and red and orange cans resemble flowers.

Miffy is KPMB’s latest contribution to CANstruction. Last year, our team assembled a polar bear — a symbol of resilience — to underscore the need for climate action amid rising global temperatures and melting sea ice. Past designs also include a container ship and an Easter Island megalith, both of which spoke to the precarity of our systems and our existence on Earth.
“Participating in CANstruction brings together creativity, collaboration, and community impact in a tangible way,” says Angela Gou, intern architect and co-chair of KPMB’s CSR Committee. “It’s a chance for our team to use their skills to raise awareness about food insecurity and support the Daily Bread Food Bank’s mission.”
This year’s sculptures will be displayed until Friday, May 15. Miffy is located at First Canadian Place (100 King Street West), while other sculptures are in the Exchange Tower (130 King Street West) and the TD Centre (66 Wellington Street West).
We’re grateful for the time and effort of all volunteers, and to our sponsors who generously helped bring this year’s build to life. Additional donations can be made to the Daily Bread Food Bank through KPMB’s donor page.
