April 22, 2026

In the April issue of Canadian Architect, KPMB director of digital practice Claudia Cozzitorto discusses the evolving use of artificial intelligence (AI) in architecture.

The article — written by Douglas MacLeod, professor at the RAIC Centre for Architecture at Athabasca University — explores the AI tools currently used by Canadian architectural practices. Cozzitorto shares insights into the role of AI in KPMB’s design processes, highlighting the opportunities the technology affords while maintaining a clear-eyed view of what it cannot replace.

Discussing the utility of generative design applications, Cozzitorto says: “AI is about expanding what our designers can consider, not replacing their judgment. What these tools give us is richer information, as seamlessly as possible, when design decisions are being made. That is where we see the value.”

Cozzitorto, a national leader in digital innovation in architecture, joined KPMB in 2025. With more than two decades’ experience in architecture, BIM, and digital transformation, she directs KPMB’s use of digital tools and technologies.
