KPMB associate Tyler Hall will present the Arts Commons Transformation in Calgary — recently renamed the Werklund Centre Transformation — at the World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Miami, Florida on Thursday, November 13. The project was shortlisted for an award in WAF’s “Future Project: Culture” category earlier this year.

The Werklund Centre Transformation is among the largest arts-focused infrastructure developments in Canada, expanding the Arts Commons performing arts venue originally built in 1985. The project reimagines the full city block site, located adjacent to Calgary’s Olympic Plaza, as a public-facing cultural destination that is welcoming and accessible to all.

The project features a new three-storey performing arts venue with 1,000-seat and 200-seat theatres designed by KPMB in association with Hindle Architects and Tawaw Architecture Collective.

The Werklund Centre’s design was informed by an extensive engagement process, which underlined inclusivity and access to the arts as key project drivers, along with a desire to thoughtfully connect the institution to Calgary’s historic, cultural, and environmental contexts. As such, the building’s form draws on the concept of a lodge — a place of gathering, storytelling, and close connection to nature.

At WAF, the Werklund Centre Transformation will compete with 15 other cultural projects in its category. The jury will select a winning project following individual presentations.
