This Saturday at the Architecture and Design Film Festival in Toronto, Ramona Adlakha will discuss how women’s contributions to architecture have been overlooked throughout history and the ongoing effort to reclaim visibility.
The panel conversation with Lisa Landrum and Sue-Jean Chung follows a screening of Out of the Picture. Drawing on insights from researchers, academics, and architects, the Belgian documentary investigates the cultural and institutional mechanisms that have diminished the accomplishments of women in architecture and reserved recognition for men.
Out of the Picture is one of 14 films being screened at the TIFF Lightbox for this year’s edition of ADFF, which KPMB is proud to sponsor. The line-up includes documentaries about the CN Tower, Oscar Niemeyer’s COPAN building in São Paulo, the Googie movement, and the enduring influence of the Bauhaus.
In addition to her role as an associate at KPMB, Ramona is also the executive board chair for BEAToronto (Building Equality in Architecture Toronto).
In 2019, she co-edited Women [Re]Build: Stories, Polemics, Futures, an anthology of reflections from women designers. As a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania, she co-founded Penn Women in Architecture (PWIA) and organized two symposiums on architectural practice and the role of women in AEC.
The Lightbox was designed by KPMB as the first purpose-built home for TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival). It combines a 42-storey point tower with a five-storey flexible loft structure that features a triple-height atrium, a suspended master control booth, and cinemas.
