On October 30, KPMB will host the Toronto BioBuild Collective for an evening dedicated to regenerative materials and circular building experimentation. “Growing Buildings: Exploring Bio-Based Design with Jerry Hacker & Lisa Moffitt” will feature both guest speakers sharing insights from their teaching, design research, and hands-on building practices.

Hacker is an assistant professor at the Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism at Carleton University and the founder of ideas-based practice hACT. His keynote presentation is titled “Trading Textbooks for Crowbars”. Dr. Moffitt, an associate professor of architecture at the Azrieli School and founder of Studio Moffitt, will discuss regenerative design research and pedagogy.

A conversation about material experimentation, circular building, and collaborative design will follow the talks, along with networking with architects, designers, and sustainability advocates.

The Toronto BioBuild Collective brings together individuals from across the city’s AEC sector interested in integrating sustainable bio-based materials into mainstream building practices. KPMB officially joined the collective in 2024. KPMB principal Kael Opie, associate Tyler Hall, and acting KPMB Lab director Alex Lukachko are members.

In February 2025, KPMB, SvN, and the Toronto BioBuild Collective curated “Building with Natural Materials”, an exhibition exploring the potential for bio-based and geo-based materials in construction. The exhibition featured contributions from Zachary Mollica, Hal/f Climate Design, Étienne Issa, and Krista Ross.
