The Allied Music Centre has been named a finalist in the 2026 Architizer A+ Awards.
The modernization and expansion of Toronto’s iconic Massey Hall is one of five global projects shortlisted for the Popular Choice Award under the “Halls & Theatres” category. Public voting to determine the winner is open until May 15, 2026.
When the project began, the unofficial mandate from The Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall was “Improve everything, change nothing.” Completed in two phases, the modernization began with a careful renovation of the historic concert hall with GBCA Architects and was followed by a seven-storey addition immediately to the south. A series of suspended glass walkways link the old and new architecture.
In collaboration with theatre consultants Charcoalblue, KPMB designed new custom seating for the historic music hall, which has allowed for standing audiences for the first time in Massey Hall’s history.
The new Allied Music Centre, whose bent metal profile evokes a stage curtain and stands as a contemporary backdrop to the heritage building, expands Massey Hall’s reach. It houses two new live music venues and facilities supporting artist development, community engagement, and educational programming. Dressing rooms, a green room, touring staff offices, and a new loading dock support the historic music hall and enable it to host a greater volume and diversity of performances annually.
