KPMB has partnered with BAIDA (Black Architects and Interior Designers Association) to host the organization’s first-ever Externship. Like an internship, the program will offer post-secondary students and recent graduates of design programs access to a professional architecture practice and a chance to produce new work for their portfolios.
Between March 16 and 27, participants will spend four days at KPMB’s office in Toronto. They will shadow staff, attend design reviews and knowledge-sharing sessions, and learn about KPMB’s culture and life in professional practice.
Participants will also work on a design charrette with the support and mentorship of BAIDA members. The charrette will involve designing a sculptural canopy, exploring topics like form finding, design thinking, and accessibility. At the end of the two-week program, all projects will be presented to KPMB’s design staff in the office for meaningful discussion and critique.
BAIDA was founded in January 2019 to address the historic underrepresentation of Black students, architects, and interior designers in Canada. As a result, the Externship program will prioritize BIPOC post-secondary design students and recent graduates. However, all are welcome to apply.
One Externship participant will be invited to return to KPMB for a four‑month paid summer internship beginning in May.
The application deadline is Friday, March 6th.
