We’re pleased to share that the Downsview Framework Plan, designed with Henning Larsen, SLA, and Urban Strategies Inc., is a finalist for The Pineapples awards in the International Future Place category.
Now in its seventh year, the UK-based Pineapples awards, launched by The Developer, recognize excellence in every stage of the development, design and delivery of placemaking, from community engagement to Place of the Year. It celebrates built and future projects and initiatives that positively impact places and people.
When developing the Downsview Framework Plan, the design team worked with consultants, local and Indigenous communities, and city-wide stakeholders in Toronto. The team engaged with more than 3,000 people to ensure a collective and informed vision that draws on and supports the diversity of Downsview and the city of Toronto.
The result is a framework for redeveloping 520 acres of airfield into a sustainable, pedestrian-friendly residential and commercial district. With a focus on people, place, and nature, Downsview will be transformed into a transit- and community-oriented hub inclusive of affordable housing units for 80,000 residents; a community centre; community-led initiatives like markets, maker spaces, and urban farms; a network of green spaces and parks; and thousands of job opportunities.
