At the inaugural Boston Climate Leader Awards, Mayor Michelle Wu and the City’s Environment Department recognized leaders advancing sustainability across the city. Among the top honorees was Boston University, recipient of the Emerald Skyline Award (Buildings) in the Business and Institution category, celebrated for its ambitious goal of achieving net-zero direct emissions by 2040.

Central to this commitment is the Duan Family Center for Computing & Data Sciences, Boston’s largest fossil fuel–free, carbon-neutral building. Powered entirely by renewable electricity, including energy from BU’s own wind farm, the Center embodies a bold shift toward sustainable campus development and sets a precedent for environmentally responsible institutional architecture. The Center showcases how cutting-edge design and operational efficiency can align with climate goals, offering a visible, large-scale model of decarbonized construction in the urban core.

The Climate Leader Awards, chosen from 117 nominations, spotlighted achievements across energy, resilience, and environmental protection, emphasizing innovation, equity, and collaboration.
