KPMB Lab joins the Toronto BioBuild Collective

Article content
Earlier this year, we joined the Toronto BioBuild Collective (TBC), a group of architects, engineers, researchers, and construction professionals committed to transforming building practices by integrating sustainable, bio-based materials into mainstream construction. Members include DIALOG, SvN Architects + Planners, MJMA, Ha/f Climate Design, and the Toronto Circularity Network.
Throughout the year, we’ve hosted TBC knowledge sharing workshops and sessions. In the summer, TBC’s first public event centered around a crucial question: “How can we integrate bio-based materials into Toronto’s construction industry?”
Bio-based materials are derived from natural, renewable sources and contribute positively to the environment by sequestering carbon. During the event, attendees shared insights on the history and modern applications of these materials, with examples ranging from Indigenous longhouses to more modern projects.
Strategies for integrating bio-based materials into mainstream practices were also explored, such as building awareness and education, incentivizing the adoption of these materials, and developing regulations that acknowledge and encourage their use.
The event, and others like it, have highlighted the importance of community in driving sustainable construction forward. Interested in a partnership, or learning more about the Lab’s work? Contact us at kpmblab@kpmbarchitects.com
