University Boulevard is the social heart of UBC. The redevelopment project represents the implementation of a key component of the University Boulevard Neighborhood Plan to make this area become the center of the University Town concept, which rose out of a Main Campus Master Plan prepared in 1992. This plan, by extension, is rooted in the 1914 vision of the original campus architects.
The University Boulevard Redevelopment project will form a new gateway and strengthen the campus heart of UBC. The project is currently in the early design phases, the team of KPMB and HCM is developing a design for a series of new buildings that express diversity of use within a harmonious urban fabric and that also support a clear definition of the street and block structure of the campus. The first phase of the project will be a hybrid building that combines an underground bus terminal with a variety of commercial and university programs above grade, as well as a 24/7 space of arrival and gathering. Subsequent phases will accommodate administrative uses and housing along University Boulevard. A mix of university and commercial uses at the ground floor will animate the street level. New built form and landscape elements will strengthen campus linkages, enhance existing paths of movement and establish a memorable gateway to the campus.
