NBS only Canadian project to win AIA 2007 Honor Award for Architecture
January 12, 2007
Canada's National Ballet School's new Jarvis Street Campus Project Grand Jete: Stage 1, is the recipient of an American Institute of Architects (AIA) Honor Award, the profession’s highest recognition of works that exemplify excellence in architecture, interior architecture, and urban design. The NBS was one of eleven projects selected from over 450 submissions, and is the sole Canadian building to be honoured, only the fourth ever since the AIA first bestowed the award in 1949.

The project is the result of a close collaboration between the client and Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects/Goldsmith Borgal & Company Limited Architects KPMB/GBCA.

Notes of Interest

This ballet school is the only institution in North America to offer on one site an integral program of professional dance training, advanced academic education, and residential living. The training center was conceived as a vertical campus of three transparent elements: the six-story North Tower, a horizontal five-story “Bar” building, and a four-story Pavilion building, organized into an asymmetrical U enveloping an 1856 residence. The concept fuses architecture, dance, movement, and spectacle within a series of stacked, horizontal platforms (stages) that project the building’s program to the city. By preserving and integrating existing historic structures, the project establishes a model for the harmonious coexistence of heritage and contemporary architecture.

Jury Comments

“This is a new kind of civic place with seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces that enhanced the neighborhood…The building activates the street…Powerful and yet well balanced in its context…Works well in the environment and is an important thread to the community…Students feel the building has not only informed the community about their art form but enhanced their creativity."
